What is NFPA 70B, you might be surprised?

At a high level, the critical elements of NFPA 70B include the following:

  • Development of a safety program that includes:
    • A maintenance plan for equipment
    • Identification of personnel responsible for implementing each element of the program
  • A plan of inspections, servicing, and suitable tests, including yearly infrared scans
  • Electrical equipment maintenance and testing, including:
    • Equipment condition assessments to establish intervals of service and priority of equipment servicing
    • Tracking of maintenance activities and action items
    • Establishing a process to track progress and document results

    If you are looking for the official several hundred-page actual book you will need to either buy the book from nfpa.org (give us a call, we have copies, if you have questions) or you could download their paid download. Or an even better option would be to get their free trial for 14 days, this trial requires NO credit card so why not give it try? We will walk you through the steps to get the free 70B pdf. If you don’t want to do the free trial but still want access, we will detail those steps after this section.

    After completing the steps below you will have access to the entire NFPA – 70B Standard for Electrical Equipment Maintenance code and requirements. One thing to note is this is not a pdf it is a navigatable web interface.

    1. Go to https://link.nfpa.org/sign-up/register/trial
    2. Click Create An Account
    3. Enter in your Email Address

    4. You will be sent a code to your email, once received return back and enter in that code and fill out the rest of your information
    5. After that is completed you will be asked a few questions like what types of NFPA.org things are you interested in. It doesn’t matter how you answer them. At the end of the questions, it will give you a button to go to the dashboard.
    6. While in the Dashboard click “View All Publications”

    7. In the search box type in “NFPA 70B” and then click the “NFPA – 70B Standard for Electrical Equipment Maintenance” document

    8. Now you can browse through every detail of the NFPA – 70B Standard for Electrical Equipment Maintenance.

    NFPA gives another option to access their documentation. This is completely free, but the “pdf” they provide isn’t as clean an organized as their paid version, but it still has all the same content, just a bit harder to read.
